Singapore President Makes Historic First State Visit to Tanzania

(MENAFN) Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has made the first presidential visit from Singapore to Tanzania since diplomatic relations were established 45 years ago.

Tharman began a state visit on Monday and met Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Tuesday, marking a milestone in bilateral relations between the two countries.

During their talks, the two leaders focused on expanding cooperation across several sectors, including the blue and green economies, digital development, tourism, port infrastructure, food security, healthcare, and education, according to Singapore’s Foreign Ministry.

The visit also saw the signing of multiple agreements covering areas such as bilateral consultations, trade facilitation, carbon credit cooperation, skills development, and the avoidance of double taxation.

Both sides welcomed the East African Community’s (EAC) intention to explore a free trade agreement with Singapore, which—if concluded—would represent the bloc’s first trade negotiations with a partner outside Africa, as well as Singapore’s first such agreement with an African country.
